Rumtek Monastery

Also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre, it is located 24 km from Gangtok. Originally built by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje in the 16th century, it was renovated in 1960's by his holiness, the late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. It embodies the vision and aspiration of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, and was built to establish his seat-in-exile and help spread the teachings of the Buddha throughout the world.
